About the Breed
Origin and History
The Weimaraner is a versatile hunting dog bred by German nobility for big game and later for bird hunting. Because of its unique silver-gray coat and pale, ghost-like eyes, it is known as the "Grey Ghost."
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, athletic and elegant body. Its short, sleek coat is the characteristic silver-gray color; it is easy to care for and sheds little. Its eyes are amber or blue-gray.
Personality and Temperament
The Weimaraner is intelligent, energetic and very devoted to people. It bonds strongly with its owner and dislikes being left alone; it is prone to separation anxiety. It has very high energy and a strong prey drive; it is brave and self-confident. If its mental and physical needs are not met, it becomes destructive.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat is easy to care for. It needs a great deal of exercise and mental stimulation; long daily runs and activity are a must. It is intelligent and trainable, but its energy and independent streak call for consistent, early training.
Health
Hip dysplasia, gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV, bloat), von Willebrand disease and a bone development disorder (hypertrophic osteodystrophy) may occur. Regular check-ups are recommended. The Weimaraner suits experienced, active owners looking for a highly active, intelligent and people-oriented dog who can offer intensive exercise and attention.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
